The Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is Novartis’ global research organization. The creation of NIBR was announced in May 2002 to reorganize and enhance Novartis’ long tradition of drug discovery research.
Novartis was created in 1996 after the merger of the two Swiss chemical and life science giants Ciba (formerly Ciba-Geigy) and Sandoz. The roots of these companies go back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Since their beginnings in Basel, Switzerland, the histories of Ciba, Geigy, Sandoz and, today, Novartis, are marked by important scientific discoveries.
