Mark Fishman, M.D. is President of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) and a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis. He leads all worldwide discovery research activities of Novartis in Europe, the US, Japan and China out of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
 

Prior to accepting his current post Mark was a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Chief of Cardiology and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital. As a clinician and scientist, he is pre-eminent in the fields of genetic and molecular cardiology, with a principle focus upon embryonic heart development. He is best known for his studies in developmental genetics, in particular for his role in introducing the zebrafish as a model for gene discovery.
 

Mark is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Medical School. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency, Chief Residency, and Cardiology training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He did postdoctoral research training at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and sabbatical work with Philip Leder at Harvard Medical School. He has authored more than 160 publications and is the author of a best-selling textbook, Medicine. Mark Fishman serves on several editorial boards and has worked with national policy and scientific committees including those of the NIH and Welcome Trust. He has been honored with many awards and distinguished lectureships and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
