Since May of 2002, Cambridge, Massachusetts has been the world headquarters for the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). With its impressive pool of scientific talent, Cambridge is a globally recognized biotechnology hub. Our two main facilities at 100 Technology Square and at 250 Mass Ave are located in the heart of the city – in close proximity to the city’s renowned academic institutions, academic medical centers and biotechnology companies .
250 Mass Ave: Located about 0.5 mile from Tech Square, this 500,000 square foot facility was formerly home to the New England Confectionary Company (NECCO) a world renowned candy manufacturer that had been headquartered in Cambridge for more than 75 years. Novartis completely renovated this historic building, creating a state-of-the-art research laboratory. In addition to serving as the headquarters building for NIBR, this site is also home to oncology research, discovery chemistry, functional genomics, IK@N, the discovery technologies center, human genetics, the models of disease center, early development and molecular pathways research. The facility - opened in April 2004 – will eventually be home to more than 700 scientists.
100 Technology Square: This 250,000 square feet of laboratory space was opened in March 2003. When fully staffed, the facility will be home to 350 scientists focused on research in diabetes, infectious disease and cardiovascular disease.
